Well, alot of the locals took a break for winter. Besides Big Al, OMP, and a few others, everyone has been digging at other secret spots. We're still trying to work with the city of Austin to get some municipal support for 9th st. 20 years of free labor and not one hug... Speaking of hugs...I hear the trail drama is higher than ever this year. With Springtime comes the shovel wars. Listen to an old veteran. I've seen fist fights, rock fights, bike fights. Seen people throw sticks in front of people while riding. Ghost ridden bikes. Seen one person get a water hose and shut a line down when 25 people are riding it. I've heard death threats. I've seen people move out of town. I've seen the same jump torn down and rebuilt 6 times. I've seen people fight in a treehouse. Hell, the old Lone Star Line got plowed because of some bullshit I won't go into off the tetherball court. Anyone remember Marty Christman? He built the GRAVEYARD. And at the time that pissed off some of the locals. What about Digger Ed vs. Steve Tyler- changing a roller into a double-old school main line. Taj vs. OMP -shouting match over digging. Crazy Legs vs. Billy Bra -bike fight in the middle of 9th st. Crazy Killer Kieth vs. Denny Mack - Slacker line table versus double tear down. And that's just OG 9th st. drama. I think the recent Dang Dang- Hitler lives in Austin video is a hilarious paraody of the obvious. However, when you stack tons of dirt, devote hundred of hours of back breaking work- you have the right to expect respect from others. Diggers are a breed of their own. If you dont dig; don't worry, you can generally pay your way into their hearts with beer and food. Things that piss off diggers: Over the past 20 years digging at different trails, I subscribe to the following general trail etiquette: Be nice and friendly, say hello. Ask if you can help before you ride. If you want to start a new jump at the trails get the local's approval. Never tear down anything, build new ,leave old. Disputes are best settled on a Tetherball court. Y'all get along or shut up and dig. but who am I to say anything, I'm a washed up old half ass. Y'all tear it all down and kill each other- I don't care.
